Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop a known component of Adobe’s family, it is a professional software used to complete the post editing and creation process. Photoshop is used in vary subjects for example photography, art and in this case it is included in media as part of the creative aspects of the film and music industry, also part of the marketing.
It is completed of the any kind of tools able to change completely the change of an image, for this reason this software it is considered complicated for the amount of tools and effects applicable.
Once you opened it the first thing you will notice is a tool bar on the left hand side of your scream, those are the basic one that beginners would start experiment with, here we can find the crop tool, brush, selection, rubber and many others. Those are mainly used to edit the dynamic aspect of the picture and for photomontage technique.
Photoshop can appear as overwhelming for the amount of things concentrated in one page, but once you know what you need it is fairly straightforward. The first thing you need to learn with this software is the creation of new documents, applying the knowledge of the resolution needed, also on top the use of multiple layers for a single picture and being able to blend them to obtain a smoother effect. The higher the resolution the better the quality, however the bigger the file so in base of the size of it you adapt the image, usually 200 to 300 is the amount used.
Photomontage is the art of creating a new image within the uses of different pictures together, with this technique there is a fine line between a professional result and poor quality, however it is good fun as you create an optic illusion.
The very first tool you will learn to start this technique is the arrow, vital for the process as you will move the selected part where needed, could be one or more depending on the complexity of the job.
Photomontage is only one of the many techniques that you can apply with the use of Photoshop.
Photoshop is one of those software that the more you will use it the more you can learn about at, experimenting with different tools and creation of different effect it very important to increase your knowledge and experience about it, also there are many videos that explain different techniques.
Photoshop is all automatic as we are talking about a software so sometimes to overdose of very effects could have a bad impact onto the picture, the skill of control, and use post editing as correction, it is important to maintain the quality of the image as well as the real aspect of it. Nowadays we are looking closer the idea of perfection, something that Photoshop has helped Media realising. If you look at any magazines all images will have gone to post editing and came out as the see result, nothing would be actually appear as naturally shot, with the technology of CGI barely
anything apart in the fashion industry is shot but all created by advanced system and computers.

Simon’s Album Covers Blog Post

To enforce our knowledge into the capacity of analysing an album cover and the artist/group by only a picture, in class we took several album cover of this artist and see how much we understood of him.

The first album cover we saw was a Day In July and the name of the artist or band Marlowe.
The composition of this album cove is made by a vintage coloured picture illustrating three children by the mountain, this framed by a red background.
At first look to it I would say that we are talking about a band, as there are three children in the picture that could represent the members in the band. Also by the image the idea of organic is shown, with the idea of natural by the mountains and simple characters that don’t need much to have fun and make music.
The song seems to talk about an old memory of those three children maybe in that exact place. The genre of the song I would say country or souls maybe with a symbolic lyrics and a good beat.
The red colour used as background, has the connotation of love, and this case seeing three children maybe the thought of family if given, adding a warm feeling to it.

The second album cover changes completely the name of the band or artist is written in red with same font as the earlier album cover, but the structure change s a little having again a picture with only a single child in it, and this is the protagonist as does as the whole album cover with no frame.
The image represents this child hiding under his duvet, with a light illuminating his face and drawing the main attention the child’s face expression (terror and fear).
The idea of organic is maintain, but this time the idea of a single artist is encouraged as the child could be the singer, always getting inspired by his own experiences and telling us as an audience something personal about him self.
The genre of music I would carry on with the same as the previous one but adding something more house or electric for a heavier beat as the feeling of fear and terror should be transmit to show continuity with the front cover.
In this case the red used for the texts shows a connection to the previous work but also the idea of danger, as red is a colour used I road signs as well to draw attention to drivers.

The album cover for Textcard Lines the colour red that was earlier used to show continuity here is not presented and a play grey colour id used as background for the album cover and instead a having a photograph we have a drawing, like a motive done with geometrical figures (reminding of a display in a recording studio). This gives a modern look the whole, changing the idea of the genre of music, something more electro or house with more defined beat and style. Looking at this the idea of a group comes back as this album cover is more similar to other we have seen done by a group or artist working together.
The idea of organic is presented with the presence of the drawing as it reminds me of home making. This is obviously just a personal opinion.
All the covers seen until now where simple and straight forward, but first the name of the band/artist was always presented this time here doesn’t appear giving us the idea of either a change of name, or maybe the cover of a specific single in an album.

Another cover we analysed was You turn me on of the same artist. This digipack cover is done by a drawing image of a girl with a red background.
The name of the artist is clear, and having a single picture of an individual emphasises the idea of a single artist, however this is just an option as we assume the song would talk about a girl, maybe the one presented in the picture.
At the moment I would say that is referring to a single artist, as a group/ band wouldn’t use that icon as an album cover. The connotation and presence of red comes back, with the idea of love, probably for the meaning of the lyrics and carries on the idea of continuity with some of the previous digipack covers.
If at first red was partly considered a detail of the cover now it has a significant presence, giving us the idea that it’s an essential part or the artist and something we can recognise him with. There is no doubt the artist is a female or a band composed of more male artists as the previous pictures presented all male children, the latest digipack had a strong design something more masculine and for this one the song is dedicate to a girls all sign that we are looking in a male artist.
The genre of music goes back to the first two album covers I’ve analysed something closer to soul and country.

Now we passing to another digipack cover this time same, group Marlowe we are talking about the single Deep Breathe Fake Air, and interesting title as well as the album cover.
It is represented by a drawing picture of the human breathing system. The image is alternative giving a modern look to it, as it’s a drawing and of a human living the idea of organic is clear. The anatomy of the human body is something difficult to reflect a lyric onto to the first thoughts were about lies, smoke but something personal to the artist.
The background here is red, the predominant colour in the whole cover. It is now that red is something really significant for this artist, but the contrast of colours add something more appealing, I personally really like the utilise colours and the design of the album cover.
However I found really difficult to find the identity of the artist at first impact I would say is a band, but then referring back to the previous one the idea of a single individual is represented again in some sort of ways.
I definitely think the genre here has changed as the general look seems more modern, I would say house as my first impact, or pop.

The final digipack has a completely different style from the entire one we have seen.
A drawing pictured done with black ink take the whole cover, with a grey background, also the name of the song or possible new group has changed into Roja (meaning red in Spanish), the colour red is still an important factor and symbol for this artist as shown.
The picture presents a Spanish woman typically dressed for their culture riding a horse, this give a clear idea of the genre of music, Spanish or near countries.
I would say that we are talking about a single artist as we have a single character, but as the name is so general and there is no specific name of a person the idea of a band is still emphasised.
The change of name and genre of music makes me think that earlier we were analysing a band’s work with a component probably the main singer that took a different direction and decided to form a different one Roja. The change of genre seems to be motivated to a higher income and possibility of fame.

Now that I’ve analysed all those digipacks, the real identity of the artists is Simon the main singer of his own band, a musical group that was quite famous.
The school is organising a Skype talk with him for us students to understand stand a bit more of the musical industry and how it is to work in it. So I’ve prepared few question that I could possibly ask him:
-How did you adapt your self with the change of music industry?
-What were you aiming at with your music (fame, transmitting a message, fans, etc.)
-Did you find it difficult to design all the digipacks and try to be updated with all the technologies?
-When was the worst period for you and your music and why?
-What made you change into Roja?
-Whys is red so important in your design? Does it mean anything in particular?

Comparison of two websites

As comparison of two official website I chose Mako and Flume, two of my favourite artists.
They are both part of house music including soul and pop. They are both well known but form the website you can notice that flume must have had a bigger budget or professional making their website, as part of their marketing.
Their targeted audience is the same, teenager and young adults.
They both work very similar, collaborating with different artists to produce their music and present them online and in tour, concerts and festivals.
The very fist impression you get from the two website are: for Flume simple and straight forward, with the use of a bright colour and their new symbol (flower), to show their style of music, with no necessity of pictures as well known.
They present three features, buy, listen and get tickets now, all to promote and involve the audience to buy their music, sponsored items and go to watch them.
Once you click onto one of those, a new tab opens showing that thaey work with differnt companies, for exanple Spotify.

They have their own webpage where you vcan nut very fornitures of them, like CDs, Albums as well t-shirts with their new symbol.

At the bottom of the main page they included all the social media you cam find them for extra or different information.
This shows how updated they are making their audience feeling closer as they have different way to contact them or follow them daily. It is common from any artists or band of big fame, present and be on the main social network, for example Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Mako’s website in contrast contains more information, having a scroll bar to fit everything in it.
They have a bar where you can read their story and contact them, see pictures of previous concerts and festivals, as well as listen and download their music.
They have a scrolling of pictures running in the front page showing the artists, and some of their recent work.
They are making clear that the visitor of the website knows how the creators of the music, with picture of them. They are organic as they show the collaboration with different artists and companies but not changing their style. They image goes into second place, involving the audience as much as possible into their business and concentrating on music.

The shades of colours used are a lot simpler and darker, as sign of simplistic from the two artists. They present a bar with all the social media in it, as Flume.

They work with Soundcloud, presenting their own profile to follow in interest. They have a single page into the website with all their releases in possible download of it.
The main differences between those two websites are the quantity of information included, the organisation of it and how much marketing they are including to sell them self to the visitors, showing confidence, talent and collaboration with others.

Madonna Like A Prayer

In the music video of Madonna, Like a Prayer made in 1989, she is representing the idea of race and women’s power in a controversial way, fighting against everything that is considered within the term of racists, showing equality and freedom towards those victimised by it and underestimated.

The genre of music for this music video is a mixture between pop and African. This was done to attract a certain type of audience and clearly target the meaning of the song and the music video. I believe that the creator of this music video wanted to make something outsides of the typical stereotype, and as Madonna at the time she was already consider a famous and well known artist she wouldn’t be judged, as expected but hope for a realisation from the public.
This video shows that Madonna is an artist, not afraid for what she believes for and ready to fight for it. This was really meaningful at the time as not only partied was acted against black people but also women were unconsidered and there thoughts weren’t important as they didn’t have any rights of decisions making.
Nowadays the situation has changed drastically, making that music video appealing very modern with topics that are discussed and experience in everyday life, starting form young age.
The video represent Madonna as a religious, good looking woman, to clear the idea of her being the main character of the music video and her being the artist of the piece. This shown in several ways, with her being part of most scenes, and camera ways lots of close up of her face, emphasising even more the idea of beauty and single artist, also she is seen singing multiple part of the song.

This video has a specifically target audience, teenager and young adults as the genre of music is what used be a good representation at the time, sexuality, racisms, religion and women are all represented into a clip of 3 minutes making really intense but interesting.
The targeted audience can see them self in that situation or experienced, making the lyrics more close to them. It can bring up lots of different feeling and emotions.

In this music video we have the representation violence in the first few minutes of the clip, were we can see a group of white guy, beating a girl up and a black boy coming to help her, but being confused for the delinquent by the police and being arrested. Madonna saw the entire scene but frightened by the happening she decided to run away.
Confused and upset she ended up churching and relying on religion to find the right answer.
In here we see her knees down being blessed by a black God looking similar to the character in the previous scene.
Low angled, Madonna illustrates the power of women, being lower than men but also the power of religion. The black God represented with a high angle shows power and control over the situation.

Another strong sequence shown is Madonna frustrated by the fact she left an innocent person finish into jail, so she is singing and in the background there crosses burnings, symbol of KKK.
After Madonna woke up from her dream she has a revelation from religion about the right thing to do, deciding to go to police and tell the true letting the innocent character free.

This added a stronger image of the idea of black people being underestimated and not considered as people but as animal that shouldn’t have any rights. This video is very against all this that at the time was a huge argument that provoked wars, rebellions and the death of lots of innocents.

It shows a very strong message, but also it shows no fear from Madonna to appear as she is and to be shown as a strong woman as she is, with the right of saying her opinion about the topic publicly.

The end of music is clearly shown with a close of curtain, key of being scenes played and not reality, showing all the characters involved.
