Thriller Sequence Published

We upload the thriller sequence on youTube in the Hurtwood House channel.

The Salvatore

Evaluation Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

For the evaluation task 7 we had to present the improvements we made toward our filming skills and all the different elements we learnt during the processes of it. I used Prezi as a different way of representing it.

Evaluation Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

This is the clip of the thriller sequence annotated with the different uses of technology used through out the process of filming and editing. I personally helped to word the annotation and find the different elements of technology used, we collaborated as a group to decide where to insert the annotations and to upload them on the video.
When you are watching the thriller sequence make sure you go on seeing and turn the annotation button on.

Evaluation Question 5: How did you attract/ address your audience?

Targeted audience 15-25

Identity – the main character of our thriller sequence is a young adult going through different challenges to save her sister, death is going to be the main risk he is going to affront, and blood will be running. The targeted audience will enjoy the movie as they can see a character of their similar age, going through these challenges of surrealistic looking, although filmed to look as realistic as possible and in urban environment, psychologically constructed for a more complicated plot and perspective of a reaction.

Education – the massage for this thriller is never given up, but also education is not represented just using a quote, it is shown with in the costumes and the prop the thriller sequence was made. For example the protagonist is wearing a suite, meaning of highly educated person and highly paid, upper class individual, although this is just the appearance of the actor in the thriller, then the actual story won’t exactly be like this.
Prop wise we need to considered the use of vintage objects (keys, padlock and light bulbs), even though the thriller is illustrated in a modern key the uses of those elements made everything more interesting especially for the type of audience we are directing it to as they won’t be too used to see and manage with the type of props mentioned, something different to view and realise it brings interest, curiosity and wonder, key elements for our thriller.

Entertain – in the thriller very emotion are shown and demonstrated, frustration, tension, anger, fear and hope are present in the thriller, those feeling are usually commonly felt in every day life of our targeted audience and seeing them in a different environment or condition could bring up curiosity from the audience and enjoy even more as they see them selves in that situation. Also to add the idea of time running I added to the thriller to increase all those feelings and emotions to the limit. Having the idea of running, to chase something or from something at a younger age is the first idea to start a game, growing up it become a real fear that everyone in some way or the other one are conscious to have. Emphasising this an audience that enjoys in particular thrills will feel attached to this piece more.

Social Interaction – as this thriller is so different from everything seen before it will intrigue people in many ways, and it could become a topic just by this. If we add a complicate plotted than the interest increase as the interest audience can start compering idea between their mates and trying to find a conclusion to the story.
The emotion they felt through out the movie are really important as it will change their opinion towards the movie, positive feedback will word of mouth, followed by more views. The video id posted on you tube so everyone has access to it, parent and Hurtwood student will be aware of the Hurtwoood YouTube Channel so if they really enjoy they could easily show it to people by sending the link.

Genre
The Salvotore is a thriller/action movie as it presents features of both genres; it presents tension, thrill, fear, mystery, and frustration, blood, guns, strong language and general action.

From doing research I found out that there is a very similar scene in Saw V, however this is a horror movie so the targeted audience is similar or different. Harry Potter includes a scene where the idea od escaping from a room with lots of keys and one padlocked has been used, it is lustrated in a more crafty way and surrealism is the key for that scene, also targeted for a family audience.

Setting
The setting for The Salvatore are not complicated but more elaborated than other thriller made, this will add mystery to the sequence and a sense of effort will be felt through out the piece, it seems professional and expensive when it wasn’t that costly.
Those aspects for the general setting are done create curiosity, and wonder what is going to happen next, as this is just the opening sequence of a whole movie.
The props are vintage, adding a better designed look and interest towards the audience as not used to manage and see those objects as usual as electronic equipment.
Creativity is shown, encouraging the audience especially those that are interested into arty subjects, will feel more inspired by watching the thriller.
In this targeted audience the ideas of travelling, being creative and get experienced, for how strong those are they will affect their mentality and dreams.

Narrative
The narrative of the story of the whole movie is a complicated plot, where this young man to find the cure for her ill sister is brave enough to expect very challenges, like stilling, murdering and risking his own life.
The opening sequence shows the protagonist trapped in this cell, full of keys and only one padlock, however the time condition are restricted so he needs to try to escape before the villains will come to kill him.
As it is very psychological as opening sequence and lots of diverse emotion are demonstrating and felt while watching the sequence. My targeted audience will appreciate this as they feeling of fear and struggle, with the image of a customised hero that to save someone he loves his disposed to kill, intrigues the audience adding interest to it.
The character being a young adult it gives the idea of adventure and inexperience, a fear representation of the targeted audience.

Media Representation
The targeted audience is young adults between 15 and 25 years old, preferable male, I selected this audience as I believe that their interests are illustrated in The Salvatore.
For example, the feeling of fear and the representation of death is likely to be enjoyable for this targeted audience as they are considered the generation of video games. The thriller presents action and uses of guns, blood and strong language, other elements researched in this targeted audience as they have never experience such as thing, feeling involved with in the movie and for once feel what it mean to be part of it, gives them the feeling of adrenaline that are always looking for just in different actions, for example a football match and travelling.
The main character wears a suite and for this targeted audience the idea of one day be part of a high social class having a well pay is part of their dreams and hope. Dressing cope, stylish it is important for the targeted audience especially if we talk about special occasion.
If the main character would have been a famous actor, I believe the best at incorporating the character would be Dylan O’Brien from The Maze Runner.

Music
Music wise we didn’t use as soundtrack, this was done because we used different type of sounds effect in the background to increase the tension and the felling being chased by someone one. Also silence is considered of big impact especially to add tension to the scene.
As sound effects we used several different sound from adobe and created a sequence that we repeated few times, and increasing the volume of it we created the idea of time running and ne chased after someone. This increases tension and adds mystery to the sequence, as the sound is heard but not shown.
All those features will increase the interest towards the thriller, as the audience is generally looking each of them. The idea of not knowing what is going to happen next and what is actual happening has always brought up frustration towards the audience as their curiosity won over any other feeling, and if we add tension with action than is just more appealing for them to carry on watching.

Title
The title is The Salvatore that in Italian means the saviour, young adults audience always think about travelling and they have as special interest towards those in many different ways, food, language, history etc. So adding something unique to the title sequence already attracts some people as they will research and in some way they will be part of it already.
The tile sequence were written white, bold and centred in the black screen, jest to make sure those name would get all the attention needed, without any distraction. The petty of the targeted audience is easily distractive.

Editing/ film style
The style of the movie is a fast pase, but it changes through out the movie, in the opening sequence it starts slowing than to increase the feeling of tension and frustration we increased the pase becoming lot more quicker and then slowing down again, to give a breather to the audience and the time wonder what is happening and why. The editing is clean and doesn’t present any possible distraction with special effects but it is present with different points of views and perspective to get the audience even more involved and part of the whole.

Evaluation Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

For a movie is really important to understand and do in depth some researches about the targeted audience of the movie as they would increase their box office income and it would be easier for the advertisement company choose location, use of media correctly to be as efficient as possible.
I interviewed several people with different age and gender and asked them few questions about their interest on media, especially movies and the possibility to watch a my thriller sequence. I had positive and negative responses, mainly young adults men are interested in action movie and they would like to watch my thriller sequence, in contrast to girls that they would be interested even though is not their favourite genre. Middle age people as they are experienced and they have a different life style the idea of our thriller sequence sound too surrealist and psychologically too dramatic.
The questions that I asked where early simple and straight forward so that the person asked didn't have much to think about, i wanted to obtain a natural respond.
How old are you?
What is you favourite genre of movie?
What do you expect to see in a thriller?
What do you like about thrillers?
What is your favourite thriller and why?
Would you ever watch a thriller sequences really psychological that involves a hundred of keys and one padlock, in as small cell within a man trying to escape under time pressure?

Evaluation Question 4

Interviewing different age and gender people we found out that the perfect target audience for our thriller sequence are mainly boy between 17 and 25 years old.
The reason are several, even if is a wide range of age they have similar hobbies and interest, and they are mainly students at college/university or they just graduate. I decided to do a Pinterest to show in more detail and in an interactive way the interests of our targeted audience.
Researching for this informations i found out that music and the use of technology are common in this age groups as well as playing sport to get a toned body. Following clothing trends and the desire of travelling to discover new experiences and places are strong thoughts, we are surrounded by young adults that care about school and personal saving for a better future career and to achieve future objects and aims.
The main films that this age like are comics, actions and thriller. A mixture of those is the perfect combination of what this targeted audience would love to be entertained by.

Evaluation Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The thriller is base on a young man, drastically needed to change his quite life style into a real action movie, to save his ill sister finding the cure and the money. He is going through several challenges enquired by his enemies that will include guns, murdering as well as a more psychological aspect.
This thriller is very active and includes lots of mystery, tension and thrills through out the movie. I looked at very film distribution but I finally came up with best being The 20th Century Fox, as first I thought that Altitude would have represented our thriller well but as we made few changes I believe this is the best choice.
To start with at the beginning we thought that the plot was going to lot more easier, so including a more difficult plot could attract different targeted audience, I was manly looking at young adults so between 15 and 25 years old as strong language and violence will be included within the movie but the uses of vintage in modern days wouldn’t look too appealing for a older audience as the representation for them could be seen wrongly or differently.
I am personally looking to famous companies that wouldn’t need lots of advertising as the audience will rely on the popularity of the film distribution company and give a positive first impression
The 20th Century Fox is a really big distribution company well known in the whole world, it has produced and distributed lots movies that are well known and it has used broad audience, making movies for all targeted audiences.
Looking at its web site their movies have strong features, and their targeted audience is identical or similar to our thriller, you can easily tell this by the movie they present in their web site, most of them are thriller, horror as well as different types

As it is well know, people would come and watch the movie as they trust that distribution company and they now the actual standard of it, it is professional so any problems that might occurs they will resolve them, especially marketing wise.
This film distribution has done many films in lots different genre, looking at their main thriller they were really successful and with a similar targeted audience so I am sure The Salvatore would fit in. the budget to make the movie could depend, it is famous as a distribution company so the budget is higher than expected but seen the results of the box office I believe is worth spending more money into this process for a better results afterwards.
They use different marketing campaign, for example trailer, posters as well as TV channels (fox) and programmes, which might be already targeted for our thriller.

As it is really famous and huge as a distribution company the targeted audience is really wide and broad so there aren’t any specific problems with it as they produced and distributed thrillers, horrors as well as us children/family cartoon and films.

Some of the sample being used from this distribution company to promote some movies.

Altitude Film Entertainment is a vertically integrated film company encompassing production, finance, international sales and UK distribution. The company was formed in May 2012 by Will Clarke, founder of British production and distribution banner Optimum Releasing, which he sold to Studiocanal in 2006. Partnering Clarke is Co-CEO Andy Mayson, a highly experienced executive who has held Board-level positions at such notable companies as Working Title, PolyGram, Icon, Exclusive and Hammer.

Both of those film distribution company are well know and expensive. Altitude is less known comparing to the other one, so costs wise it will be cheaper.
I believe that if you want to produce a good professional movie you should spend more on money for the film distribution company and then you will see a much higher profit. Also they would make a good publicity to the movie reducing the cost for advertising. To justify those facts I watched few thrillers from their best movies and I saw the rank list of the best movie they made and they made really famous movie well know by all the filming production companies.

Overall those film distribution companies are both superb, but I believe the best for our thriller will be Altitude as it is specified on thriller and horror and has a targeted audience closer to our description. Also they have produced really famous movies and it is well know, so we would be secure on ending with a professional work. The budget will be lot reduced compare to other companies being an advantage for us.

Evaluation Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The Salvatore
My Thriller sequence talks about a young adult that to save her ill sister is disposed to kill people in exchange to the cure. This young boy goes through lots, risking his life and finding enemies that would try to kill him playing around with his emotions, feelings and brain thinking.
The opening sequence of the movie is the main character trapped in a cell full of keys hanged up and just one padlock, he needs to try to escape before they will come to shot him. Time setting is based on a routing repeating several time getting louder as time pass, foot steps, the cell opening, gun shot and a body falling.
This thriller sequence is really physiological and includes use of strong language as well as action, so it is aimed mainly for male teenagers young adults audience.
The clip represents this social group in vary ways: firstly the mise-sense, as it plays a big part of the whole sequence.
It is based in a cell made of grey concrete walls that gives the idea of claustrophobia, increasing the tension through out the scenes, following up with props, hundreds of keys that filled up the whole set and a single padlock, those are designed in a old fashion, giving to the audience a different point of view and making the scene more interesting for the viewers.
This is considered a complicated set of an opening sequence creating confusion to the audience and wanting to know more about the rest, for those reasons it will intrigue more male young adults audience instead of young children that wouldn’t understand the plot in the first place or middle age adults that are more into straight forward well plotted movies. Also the main character is wearing a suite and he looks bitten up to emphases more the idea of action and mystery, the stereotypical interests from this targeted audience. The main character wearing a suite also represent the upper class and status, making his character more important, or someone that is definitely gaining enough money to live or it has a well fame job. It could also mean a costume for a fake perspective to look at the character, as we are talking about a thriller it would be part of the mystery of it.

Secondly the sound plays an important role in the clip as there are different sounds included that together help the audience to understand the idea of action and tension.
The first sound we can here is a non-diegetic dripping sound with an eco effect to encourage the idea of depth of the location, this would also suggest the idea of being underground so in a hidden location and not really appealing with low living conditions, a younger audience wouldn’t appreciate this as would be clear for them, oppositely for our targeted audience is an encouraging sound that will impose questions and the needed to watch more. At the beginning of the scene just the dripping sound effect have been added, increasing the quietness and silence of the opening, as we learnt most of the times silent is the most powerful sound effect that you could ever find as human as they are sounded by noise the all the day it is unusual to have for few seconds a moment of complete silent adding feeling of uncomforted. A male grown up audience would enjoy this feeling more as they won’t feel in power of what is happening and their curiosity will keep them watching the movie.
Than we have the sound effect of voices talking, this sound is unclear to carry on with idea of depth and it last for few seconds and you won’t here it again, so wonder is an emotion added to the sequence. In this opening sequence there is a compilation of sounds put together that would give the idea of time running, increasing but loudness, this sequence is a man walking, the cell’s bars opening, a gun shot and a body falling. This increases the tension through out the clip, to add even more of those feeling of frustration and tension the character started to panic reacting with the uses of strong language and movements. This would be too inappropriate for a child to watch and hear, and probably not so interesting for a grown up adult as they have watched so many movie and they would probably find too predictable for their interests. Female usually they dislike the uses of strong language in a movie and stereotypically they prefer a romance with a simple script and low tone of volume.
In this opening sequence there non diegetic sound of the dripping water, cells opening, foot steps, gun shots and bodies falling, to add there is the diegetic sound of the main character getting frustrated and pleonastic sound of the keys falling on the ground, key inserted in the padlock and banging of the door. Sound plays a big role for this clip especially as most sounds are non-diegetic so you cannot see them.

Thirdly Camera movements show verity of perspective, including different shots in the sequence to intrigue the viewers to watch more and try to be part of the actual movie. Some shots are wide shots to show the location and its design, also close ups of the surrounding to get closer to the actual character and show more details, that the audience would have missed.
This change of shots for a child wouldn’t be so clear as cartoon are compose from basic shots and lots of colours to attract their attention, but for our targeted audience they would want to know more and try to look behind the focused point. We played around with camera movements showing pans and focused to unfocused points of views changing their perspective for the audience, this would increase the needed to watch more as the audience wouldn’t get bored but for a female they wouldn’t find it so interesting especially if the focused points are parts of the location, a location compare from few elements and dull lighting.
Finally Editing shows the paste of the sequence changing through the clip, it starts slowly, getting faster and slowing again towards the end of the opening. We used clean cuts to show a faster paste and to keep the audience concentrated. This will add more tensions for the audience sorts of feeling that a female audience wouldn’t appreciate as much, and for a child too distracting and demonstrating to be incapable to read behind the lines and be frightened by the happening.
To conclude we find out that an audience composed by male young adults would be perfect for put thriller as they would enjoy the verity of feeling and emotions, and they would intrigue by the location and plot of the movie.

Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This evaluation task is about comparing similar media products to my original thriller sequence. I used two different movie and a video game, comparing the set design, camera movements, editing and sound.

Sound editing

For sound editing we used different sound effects and joint them together to create the actual final sound effects. In the thriller you can hear a combined sequence of very sounds that becomes closer and closer as time is running, the sequence is composed by steps walking, opening the cell followed by a gun shot and a body falling. Those sound effects are repeated four times and one last time with no body falling to keep the mystery of the death.

At the very beginning the thriller sequence starts with drops falling and hitting the ground, this sound effects carries on throughout the whole clip, but in between it gets cover by the other sound effects so it is effective juts at the begging and the end of the sequence when silence is playing a big role. The main character is screaming through out the whole sequence, the screams don't get louder but more powerful as the protagonist frustration increases.
Pleonastic sound of door shaking, key dropping and inserting the keys in the padlock has been added, decreasing the sound effects in the background.
