Editing Process

Editing is a process used in the media subject to incorporate the best shots in a sequence, introducing different elements fro example cuts, slow motions, speed up, sound, lighting, etc. to conclude the film and make look appealing for the audience. Computer does it all, nowadays especially as technology is becoming a big topic in daily life style and routings.
As a school we use Adobe Premier as is one of the most professional and handy programme that you could use, there are lots od effects incorporated within the programme that us as inexperience students we can use to learn and practise vary things.
Before we started to edit we watch every single shots and selected the best that we could have possible use in the final sequence. I realise that lost of the shots that we made weren’t as good once we watched them on screen and we finally end it up having less that we thought we did in the shooting day. However it wasn’t a problem as we still manage to come with a good thriller sequence.
As we are four inexperience students we obviously wanted to have a go at everything and learn as much as possible. We swap around during lessons to who was physically working with the computer and who wasn’t but we all gave our opinions, also during our free period or during activities we decided to come in group or individual and make a copy od the starting of the sequence and editing. We always make a copy of the started work, as we didn’t want to ruin it especially if the other components of the group dislike it.

I helped out to opinionated the overall look of the sequence also Jess and me edited different parts of the clip, in particular the pans and close ups. The paste of the sequence wasn’t fast enough so we cut some close ups and fasten some shots to give a more jumpy effect and feelings of panic and confusion.
We use different tool to edit our thriller sequence, at first we use the cutting tool needed to select a specific part of the clip and nothing also. Another useful tool we used was the rubber tool as you can cut the clip and insert a different one in the middle, this tool is a bit more complicated to use as cutting the sequence right in the middle and use the rest of it later on can make the actual cut too jumpy so you need to shorten both clips to give a smoother look to it. We used several time the speed up tool making part of one off the main parts of the sequence, we use especially for the pans as we change the slow, visual effect to a faster, jumpy shots that added something to the scene.
All those tools we useful to gave us a first impression and experience of editing as well as adding something to the actual sequence it self. We used them for several reasons, for example to make a cut smoother or to having something looking more precise. We also used them to change the paste of some shots and the make the sequence more jumpy and intense. Unfortunately we only had 2 minute for our sequence other wise we would have include lot more shots for the opening and maybe have the possibility to use different tools.

For the order of the sequence we watch the wide shot several times and took inspiration from it to have guideline of the happening in it. Adobe Premiere helped to organise the actual clip with the timeline, putting in order each shots after each other and giving us since the beginning a specific number of shots being used, duration of them and the overall look of the sequence. Here is where we then started to introduce continuity, using clean cuts and making a connection between each shots. Showing continuity was probably the most difficult part of the editing process as some of the shots are done differently and you need to be carefully using cleaning cuts at the different action and matching them up together, other wise it will look too jumpy and unprofessional. Continuity itself could ruin all your sequence, even though you might have outstanding filming shots if you don’t know how to put them together it won’t look good from the audience perspective.
Technology wise we used clean cuts, and we matched sound and movements.
Editing is a really important process in the filming business as it can completely change the look of a sequence by just adjusting few things with the computer. You need to know computers really well and be confortable enough to use the editing programme to come out with a good clip.
I personally learnt so many things and I am conscious that there are many more things that i need to learn, those that would help me to show the difference to a simple basic clip and a professional looking one. I usually really bad with computers but working with those gave the change to get a bit more comfortable and ask several questions to use the programme, you need be to patient and be prepared of making mistakes as well as play around with the material you have got.
